You also couldn't be better placed to explore this magical waterland of rivers and creeks, lakes and inlets, with the busiest stretches of the Broads in one direction – towards Ludham, the pretty riverside village of Horning and Wroxham, the capital of the Broads – and the reedy wildernesses of Hickling Broad and Horsey Mere in the other. Whether you're at the helm of your own vessel or savouring the tranquillity from one of Herbert Woods' waterside cottages, there's nothing quite like a holiday on the Broads.
Herbert Woods offers everything from luxury cruisers to picnic boats and day boats. Above all, they have a wide selection of luxury cruisers to choose from, with ample space for between 2 and 12 people in 1–4 cabins and 1–2 bathrooms, plus a galley kitchen, TVs and heating. Bed linen is provided – all you need to bring are towels. What's more, you don't need boating experience, as these cruisers are remarkably easy to handle; you're given a full briefing on the workings of the boat, and a brief tutorial on how to control it before you set out, and after that it's up to you! There's something very special about setting off under your own steam, planning your route and deciding where to have a picnic or moor up for the night, whatever age you are. Kids especially love it, and in some ways, it can be the perfect family holiday – the quintessential retreat for stressed parents and their children looking to relax and connect with nature
If you're unsure about spending the whole of your time on the water, Herbert Woods also offers waterside accommodation in Potter Heigham, perfect for enthusiasts of fishing, walking and cycling, or those who simply wish to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Broads. And you can still experience life on the water – they also rent day boats by the hour and day if you want just to dabble in a spot of boating.
