Harbour Walk
Swing Bridge Bridge Street Whitby YO21 3PW
The most obvious place to start a Whitby harbour walk is at the hundred-year-old swing-bridge over the River Esk, which cranks open at intervals during high tides to allow the bigger boats through. Cross to the east side and you're right in the heart of the cobbled old town of Whitby, at the foot of Church Street. Stick to the west side and you can stroll along Pier Road past the small trawlers and leisure boats. Peek into the fish market (mornings from 7.30am are best for this) and then head on out past the fish-and-chip shops and amusement arcades to the pincer-like stone piers where you can stare out into the breezy North Sea. If you're still in the mood for a leg-stretch at this point, the three-mile-long beach is spread out ahead of you – stick to the sands at low tide or the sea-wall promenade at high tide.
