ate O’Clock
13A High Ousegate York YO1 8RZ
Hidden down a narrow alleyway, the nattily named ate O’Clock dishes up a fresh Mediterranean-style menu with what it descibes as a "twist of scouse". That means a very modern fish and chips (smoked sea bass fillets, chips and pease pudding) or lamb served on champ, among other things. Lunch is more for sandwiches, burgers, omelettes and risottos, while on certain nights if you eat before 8pm you can do so for under £20 a head. Ambience and decor is thoroughly laid-back and fun, with wine bottles everywhere, earthy wooden furniture and plenty of clocks on the walls – set, of course, at eight o’ clock. Reservations advised.
