With views over paddocks grazed by sheep, alpacas, a horse, and a Shetland pony, Springwood Shepherd Huts look right at home in the Yorkshire countryside. Each is a bucolic bolthole for two with a surprising amount of space to relax and take it easy. What’s also surprising is just how close this rural spot is to York. The historic city, with its Roman walls, Gothic minster and medieval streets, is less than 10 miles up the road. The location means you can use these huts for a country getaway, as a base for a city break, or a combination of the two.

There are five huts here, each designed for grown-up stays. This place is adults only and all the more peaceful for it – somewhere you can put your feet up and chill. And if it’s relaxation you’re looking for, perhaps book Jacob, Cotswold or Herdwick hut (they're all named after sheep). Those three have the added advantage of a hot tub outside. If taking a dip isn't your cup of tea, plump for Hebridean or Suffolk.

Whichever you choose, the standards are the same and the style is similar but not identical. Each has been handcrafted to exacting standards and kitted out to provide a home-from-home. That means they're rather larger than the shepherd’s huts of yesteryear; big enough for an en-suite shower room and toilet, a kingsized bed and a well-equipped kitchenette. There’s the old-fashioned pleasure of a log burner and the modern joy of underfloor heating. There’s also WiFi, a Smart TV and a Bluetooth speaker. You don’t go without much here but if you want to you can. Step outside and enjoy the simple pleasure of the stars and a campfire, or stay inside and get cosy with all the mod cons.

Free-range chickens provide a farm-fresh option for breakfast and are a constant source of amusement – they may also pop over to say hello during your stay. In fact, watching the daily doings on this sweet smallholding may be enough entertainment for the break you’re after. But if you’ve travelled here to explore York and Yorkshire, you’re in a good location. The surrounding countryside provides opportunities for local walks and there’s a good Yorkshire gastropub within walking distance. Or, in just over 15 minutes by car, you can reach the city, where there’s enough to keep you occupied for more than a weekend will allow.

The Owner Says

Here at Springwood Shepherd Huts we are a family run business running the licensed five Shepherd Huts. We have owned this land for a few years, we bought it as an agricultural 13 acre field. We wanted to build some stables and arena for our horses and other herd animals, being Alpacas, Hebridean Sheep, Shetland and Chickens. Which the animals are expanding each year! We wanted to make something unique, relaxing and for something for our guests to remember and return.

The huts are hand built by the owners. Everything about them has been designed to provide the best in comfort inside and traditional looks outside, to give you the best luxury glamping experience possible.

As you walk through the main door you reach a fully equipped, fitted kitchen area with two induction hobs, a microwave/oven, fridge with a small freezer, toaster, kettle, country style sink and all the cutlery, pots and pans you should ever need. There’s two beautiful breakfast bar stools to enjoy your breakfast or even sit by the log burner.

To the right is a king size bed, with Egyptian cotton linen, duvet and pillows, there’s also a smart TV on a swivel mount so you can view it from all around the hut. At the end of the bed is a cosy sofa facing the cast iron log burner, but don’t worry you’ll never be cold as there’s also underfloor heating throughout the whole hut to keep you warm.

Looking to the left from the main door is a fully equipped bathroom with a shower cubicle and a mains shower, sink, toilet, heated towel rail and amazingly soft towels and complementary toiletries on arrival.

Storage hasn’t been forgotten either, with storage space for hanging your clothes, and an iron and ironing board included.

Saving the best until last, outside you’re treated to seating beside a fire pit, looking out onto the fields where our Hebridean sheep and Alpaca’s grazing. The fire pit can be used as a BBQ and parking is to the side of your hut.

Three of our huts have private hot tubs looking out over our field, ready for you arrival to hop straight in. Or watch the stars on an evening while relaxing in the hot tub.

So whether you want to escape from it all and do nothing but enjoy peace, quiet and beautiful surroundings or if you want to be out and about enjoying York’s attractions, it’s all here.

What a hidden gem

Recently stayed here for a few nights away and what a hidden gem. The most peaceful relaxing place it is, it had animals and chickens that came to greet us on our arrival. The huts are so well equipped, super comfy bed, and the added touches really make it special. If you’re looking for a perfect break away only a short drive to the centre of York then this is the place to go! We are so looking forward to returning - Thank you
