A contemporary townhouse hotel in one of York's best locations

Few York hotels have such a gilded location – close to the river and Museum Gardens, tucked into the historic streets near the Minster. And even fewer have a backstory to match, being a three-storey Georgian building that used to house visiting judges while they presided over cases.
After a sympathetic makeover, the vibe is contemporary townhouse hotel, with variously sized rooms mixing bespoke furnishings and original features. No two are the same and, given the building’s age, expect a bit of a squeeze here and there, though some rooms are far more characterful and spacious. And with a decent breakfast, fresh milk and biccies in the room, and access to a nearby gym, everyone gets a bit of pampering. A cellar bar and grand Georgian restaurant reflect the building’s history. Meanwhile, the courtyard terrace on the street called Lendal is one of York’s most favoured meeting places – great for a bar meal or a drink, before a stroll into the heart of the city.
