Budget-priced pub stays in York can be a bit hit and miss, but the Bootham Tavern comes down on the right side of things, thanks to the location and some smallish but smart, en-suite rooms all themed around York landmarks. Pay more for the superior double and get a free-standing bath into the bargain; and there’s also one keenly priced single room with Minster views. You’re right by the city walls, a few minutes’ walk from all the main attractions, and fifteen minutes from the train station, so it’s a great sightseeing base. There’s nearby parking, but it’s pay-and-display.

People like the breakfasts (charged extra, available to walk-in non-guests too), the cheery staff, the beer garden, and craft ales and spirits – it’s a proper pub with a restyled Victorian interior. But it’s as well to know that rooms at the front face a busy main road, while the pub itself has TV sports and live music at weekends, so it’s not necessarily the choice for a quiet, romantic stay. But for a full-on York city-centre break, it’s hard to beat for the price.
