Café No 8
8 Gillygate York YO31 7EQ
Stray just outside the city walls (it's a few steps around the corner from Bootham Bar) and you’ll happen upon the unassuming Café No 8, whose delectable menus attract a very loyal following. You can drop in for coffee, a sandwich or the house burger, though the main menus are reallly good value too – say fig tart with plum chutney and Ribblesdale cheese, followed by braised lamb shoulder with bubble and squeak or a wild mushroom risotto, and finishing off with a slab of cheesecake. At the weekend, all brunch dishes are a fiver, from French toast to smoked salmon kedgeree. The long, thin restaurant has charms of its own, and a window on to the busy street, though it's the leafy summer garden backing onto the ancient city walls that's the insider's choice.
