House of Trembling Madness
48 Stonegate York YO1 8AS
This atmospheric pub occupies the oldest medieval hall in York, secreted away above a deli shop and off-licence (look for the sign on the shop window on your left as you walk down Stonegate towards the Minster). They serve microbrews, beers and guest ales of varying provenance and percentages – the stronger the beer, the pricier it is, and they have stocked thousands over the years. Food is in the same quality vein – beer-friendly soups, stews and platters, available at any hour the pub's open. The decor is suitably medieval, with old wooden beams and solid oak benches and tables, and even a few stuffed foxes and badger skins up on the wall.
