A firm favourite on York’s fine-dining scene, Melton’s is the place for accomplished Modern British cooking that champions locally sourced ingredients. The menu changes with the seasons and availability, but Yorkshire trout served with samphire from the coast or free-range chicken with an Ampleforth cider cream give an idea of the range. It's all impeccably presented, but it's not pretentious in the slightest – fairly relaxed in fact, and undeniably good value, especially at lunch or if you get there in time for an early dinner (arrive 5.30pm–6.15pm, leave before 7.45pm).
