During race meetings York is flooded with visitors – the roads are choked with traffic, hotel rates rocket and getting a table at a decent restaurant is indecently difficult. The racecourse is situated to the south of the city, and hosts some of the best of the flat racing in the UK calendar. The Yorkshire Ebor meeting (mid-August) attracts thousands of race goers, who come decked out in their finery, particularly on Ladies Day.
