Yorkshire Museum and Gardens
Exhibition Square York YO1 7EW
The wonderful Yorkshire Museum traces the county’s rich history, from its Neolithic origins via the mighty Romans and the Vikings to its medieval legacy. Exhibits include stunning jewels, statues and weapons – look out for the most complete Anglo-Saxon helmet ever found in the UK, the extraordinary medieval Middleham jewel, and the fine Gilling sword dating from the Anglian era. Elsewhere, it's almost a lucky dip of historical, ethnographical, geological and biological treasures, from beetles and meteorites to Roman hair and stained glass. After immersing yourself in so much history, take a break in the lovely gardens, where you'll also find Yorkshire's oldest working observatory, which is open a couple of days a week.
