Don't even think of one of the chain coffee houses in York when places like Spring Espresso can ride to the rescue with a perfectly poured cup of java. The brews are all carefully sourced and if you're not sure what to order there's plenty of friendly help to hand – plump for a Chinese or Japanese tea and there's a whole tutorial about tea pots, tea and pouring techniques. Sandwiches and cakes make it a viable lunch place too, but we love a lounge on the sofa and a gaze through the window onto Fossgate when we want to while away an hour away from the crowds.
