The Eagle and Child
49 Saint Giles Oxford OX1 3LU
This Oxford favourite, variously known to locals as the Bird and Brat or Bird and Baby, even Bird and Bastard, was a favourite haunt of Tolkein and CS Lewis, though now its customers are mainly tourists. Nonetheless the two cosy snugs at the front of this long, narrow establishment, and the larger room at the back, are great spaces to take the weight off and have a beer in an environment steeped in classic Oxford history.
