Deference is the name of the game here: everything about the Randolph lives up to its name as the city’s most popular, mainstream luxury hotel. It has a fantastic central location, directly opposite the Ashmolean, and offers all the trappings you’d expect from a leading chain of hotels. Rooms are grand, generous and smart, with a whole host of facilities thrown in. Even if your budget doesn’t stretch to a night’s stay, a well-heeled Afternoon Tea (old-world atmosphere, piano player, crisp tablecloths and piles of clotted cream) or an indulgent trip to the in-hotel spa might be tempting. The hotel’s restaurant is also impressive – with a creative menu, welcoming staff and an extravagant atmosphere. For a quick drink, stop by the Morse Bar where the famous TV detective frequently visits for the show. Parking available – £28.50 a day – convenient although expensive.
