The name lets you know what you’re in for – simply Oxford’s best steakhouse, now with seven boutique rooms added. It’s a lovely Victorian building set in residential terraces at the train-station end of town, with a very handsome restored interior of leather banquettes and bespoke chandeliers. The Smithfield Market-sourced, charcoal-grilled steaks are a huge deal, as good as you’ll find, but there are also fantastic grilled breakfasts and brunches, which bodes well for overnighters.
The rooms are very grown-up spaces of sober colours, king-sized beds and fancy bathrooms. More gent-about-town than hipster, and fully furnished with stylish writing desk, coffee machine, nice teas and artisan toiletries. You’re away from the hustle and bustle here, but when you need to stretch your legs, you’re just a stone’s throw from riverside walks or it’s a 15- to 20-minute stroll into the centre of town. It’s really handy for the station too (just a five-minute walk), so it’s a great find if you’d rather leave the car at home.
