Merton might not be as famous as some of the other colleges, but this is where academic history was made as it was the first educational establishment to gather students and tutors in the same place. It also boasts original features from the 1200s and 1300s, including the chapel, and the mullioned windows and gothic doorways of Mob Quad. More common-sense-style history was made here in the 1300s in the library, when a clever fellow decided to break with the tradition of storing books in piles, and instead placed them upright, spine outward, on shelves.
