You can’t help thinking that Philip Pullman must have hung out here rather a lot while researching his His Dark Materials trilogy: there’s something alluringly medieval about this place, with its odd equatoriums, quadrants and the like. Non-boffin kids will probably bore quickly here, but it’s still worth a quick visit, if only because Elizabeth I’s very own astrolabe is housed here, as is Einstein’s blackboard.
