Jorvik Viking Centre
15–17 Coppergate Walk York YO1 9WT
Before the Victorians, the medieval walls and the mighty Minster, York was a sprawling, bustling Viking town – one of the most important in Europe. The Jorvik Viking Centre brings the Vikings back to life via an assortment of reconstructed huts, farmyards, blacksmiths and craft workshops, and even a cesspit – be prepared to cover your nose, the Vikings weren’t the most fragrant people. After your ride round the village on the ‘Time Capsule’ you can explore the myriad items dug up on site – Jorvik was built over a fully functioning archeological dig – among them plentiful skeletons, weapons, coins and even a few Viking-aged insects. It's definitely worth pre-booking to avoid the queues – you'll pay a pound extra but will be given a specific time slot for your visit, which means no hanging around.
Need to know – the floods in December 2015 hit Jorvik and the attraction is closed until further notice. Check the website for the lastest details.
