The Witchery by the Castle
Castlehill Royal Mile Edinburgh EH1 2NF
The Witchery enjoys iconic status on the Edinburgh restaurant scene, and not without reason: its unique setting cheek-by-jowl with the Castle and a theatrical ambience that draws heavily on a macabre gothic theme make it quite unlike anywhere else you will ever eat – and the food isn't bad either. The menu is rich and varied, and sprinkled with classics like lobster thermidor and haggis. It's also very Scottish, and features super beef and game and lots of terrific seafood (oysters, scallops, langoustines and plenty more from the country's natural larder), They do a special lunch menu which is a way to get a taste of all this without breaking the bank, as well a famous afternoon tea, and if you want to stay over it has 9 sumptuous suites in much the same manner that make for perhaps Edinburgh's most romantic place to stay.
