If you want easy access into the multiple delights of Edinburgh, but are keen to escape the hubbub of the city at the end of a day of sightseeing – plus enjoy a splash of community life – the welcoming Sun Inn is for you. It’s quite a place, hunkering under a grand old railway viaduct – yes they serve ace Scottish ales, but also have a Gin & Cocktail Bar and a Coffee House. With a terrace too outside, the Sun Inn manages to be many things to many people. Upstairs lie the half dozen rooms with their Purdeys of Argyll toiletries and Egyptian cotton bedding. I particularly love the suite that comes with a hulking stand-alone bath right in the bedroom; Winnie’s Suite meanwhile sports a riverside terrace.
The dining is no slouch either – after all this is a former AA Pub of the Year and a Scottish Gastropub of the Year winner. There is a nod away from the capital towards the other direction with their Borders beef burger topped with cheese and bacon in a brioche bun with skinny fries. Or how about ‘Pig on a Plate’: crispy pork belly, braised pig cheek, Parma ham wrapped pork loin, black pudding, crackling, a creamy mash and savoy cabbage? That they serve a heaving Full Scottish breakfast until just short of lunchtime is a bonus too – this feast will set you up for a hard day of sightseeing pounding Edinburgh’s cobbles.
