Like its sister hotel in Glasgow, the hotel's subtly lit corridors lead to three types of guest room – Cabin rooms, Classic rooms and a sumptuous Suite. There are 11 wood-panelled 'Cabin' rooms in all, each of which consciously channel the furnishings and atmosphere of the Orient Express, with a snug, berth-like feel, luggage racks for storage, cosy beds and wet-room-style showers. The 10 Classic rooms are larger, with four-poster beds and sofas, while the highly-in-demand Suite has all of the traits of the Classic but with more space and a free-standing bathtub. Privacy is everything at House of Gods. Breakfast hampers are delivered to the rooms, which also feature call buttons for a glass of champagne or just milk and cookies after hours. Given the nature of the building, the rooms have been designed with glass panels for light but no windows, thus ensuring complete seclusion.
Eschewing the traditional, you'll be checked in with a glass of fizz in the Resident's Bar, where the walls are adorned with flamboyant heron-print Gucci wallpaper beneath a dazzling paint-dripped disco ball. You can also enhance your stay at this characterful hotel with various additional packages to elevate your experience – above all, don't miss the drag show and karaoke at adjoining Donatella's. Should you want to venture out, it’s worth remembering that you are bang in the middle of Edinburgh, right on the city's Royal Mile. House of Gods may be a destination in itself, but it's also extremely handy for seeing the sights of Scotland’s capital.
