Mary King's Close
2 Warriston’s Close Edinburgh EH1 1PG
Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Edinburgh was a teeming, densely populated place, with houses both stacked high and dug down into the hillside. Spookily, remnants of many of the subterranean streets and dwellings can still be seen, either on dedicated tours or here at Mary King's Close, probably the best-preserved section of this 'lost city'. Costumed actors lead you through the dank, murky underground world, with tales of ghosts, disease and toilet humour as they go.
