New Town
New Town, Edinburgh.
Edinburgh's 'New Town', in fact well over 200 years old, was one of the world's first examples of town planning. Its broad, geometric streets and fine, elegant architecture are in complete contrast to the higgeldy piggeldy medieval Old Town, though both combine to form a World Heritage Site. The southern part of the New Town, along Princes Street, George Street and Queen Street, is dominated by retail and business premises, but further north it is residential and far more beguiling. Starting from the Robert Adam-designed Charlotte Square, a stroll north a few blocks along streets and crescents such as Heriot Row, India Street and Moray Place is by far the best way to appreciate the crisp and distinctive identity of the area.
