The Palace of Holyroodhouse
Canongate The Royal Mile Edinburgh EH8 8DX
The grand royal residence in Edinburgh, the Palace of Holyroodhouse combines a series of elegant state rooms with smaller but equally engrossing medieval sections, including Mary, Queen of Scots' quarters, the scene of the dramatic 16th century murder of her courtier David Rizzio. It's worth taking in the grounds too, which include the ruins of 13th century Holyrood Abbey, while among the palace outbuildings, the Queen's Gallery puts on exhibitions of art from the august and remarkably well-endowed Royal Collection.
