The Royal Mile
Royal Mile
The narrow, sloping, cobbled thoroughfare running from the entrance of Edinburgh Castle to the gates of the Palace of Holyroodhouse is, in fact, just over a mile in length, but lies right at the heart of historic Edinburgh and its eventful past. The main drag may be clogged with tourists and ugly souvenir shops, but in addition to the many important buildings there's something to explore down almost every arched entranceway (known as closes, or wynds), including secluded gardens, intricate architecture, pubs and restaurants.
