Edinburgh Military Tattoo
32 Market Street Edinburgh EH1 1QB (box office)
The annual Military Tattoo is often associated with the Edinburgh Festival, but while it also takes place in the centre of the city during the month of August, the militaristic pomp, massed parades of bagpipes, expertly choreographed dance displays and battle re-enactments have little artistically in common with the world's biggest arts event. Hugely popular, particularly with overseas visitors, the Tattoo takes place on the Castle Esplanade, with large banks of seating erected each summer especially for the event, and culminates each evening with a lone piper picked out by spotlight on the Castle's ramparts, followed by a burst of fireworks.
