Theatre at the Edinburgh Festival
Royal Mile, Edinburgh.
Theatre is the largest single element of the Fringe, and always figures strongly within the International Festival programme. The range is mind-boggling, from straightforward renditions of Shakespearean classics by university dramatic societies to bizarre productions in the oddest of settings (such as public toilets or the inside of a car), with a sprinkling of household names and groundbreaking new drama also on show. The programme at the Traverse Theatre is consistently top-drawer, with strong line-ups at Assembly and the various 'C' venues, but the real essence of the Fringe remains the smaller, offbeat and occasional venues, where ambitious, high-quality but often unheralded theatre takes place.
