A Room in Leith
1a Dock Place Leith EH6 6LU
Leith is most renowned in Edinburgh’s culinary circles these days for its Michelin star gastronomic temples, but there is a bit of a gap between those and the hearty pubs that keep the local dock workers and Bohemians happy. A Room in Leith does a good job of filling that gap. Occupying a cosy wee spot right on the waterfront with tables sprinkled along the water’s edge in the warmer months, the food here is hearty, but also refined and superb value; they don’t just do a simple smoked salmon starter, but rather a Loch Duart salmon tartare laced with sauce vierge, dill mascarpone and crispy seeded flatbread. The highlight amongst the mains is the ‘Leith Scottish Seafood Platter’, which comes heaving with Shetland Blue mussels in a Dunsyre blue cheese cream sauce, Loch Creran oysters, Shetland scallops, Scrabster coley and Loch Duart salmon kebab, dressed Buckie brown crab, smoked halibut and hot smoked brown trout fillet. Their bar annexe next door, Teuchters Landing, boasts a decent wine list and an excellent range of whiskies and beers too.
