Edinburgh's 'other castle' is well worth a visit. Part of this grand old dame ekes as far back as the 14th century and it is one of the finest ruined medieval castle left standing in the country. Expertly managed by Historic Scotland it presides over a privileged location on a bluff overlooking former Royal hunting grounds. Today its battlements offer sweeping views of the city and the surrounding hills. Other notable features are a remarkably well preserved curtain wall and the sturdy tower house, which has plenty of nooks and crannies for all the family to explore. This is not a slick tapestry and oil painting strewn castle, rather a proper old fashioned ruin that you can really let your imagination run wild in and transport yourself back to the days when Mary Queen of Scots practised her archery skills in the grounds.
