There's something about the Norfolk countryside that's special. Maybe it's the fact that (like Cornwall) it's not on the way to anywhere – when you reach the North Norfolk coast, you've literally reached the end of the road. Maybe it's the gentle beauty of its understated, intensely rural landscape. However, one thing is for sure, due to its many and varied country estates, Norfolk is full of terrific places to stay in amazing locations – and none more so than Godwick Hall.

Situated in the heart of the North Norfolk countryside between Fakenham and Swaffham, Godwick Hall is the ultimate country estate – basically, a handsome Georgian house set within 100 acres of grounds that's an ideal spot for a big group get-together or idyllic family holiday. With its sumptuous Great Barn, it's also a terrific venue for a wedding.

Sleeping up to 14 guests in a high degree of luxury, the location is gloriously secluded, with only the deserted estate village of Godwick for company, yet it's close enough to be an ideal base for seeing the considerable attractions of this part of Norfolk – for example, Castle Acre, Sandringham, Holkham Bay and Wells-next-the-Sea. The house has seven bedrooms, each individually furnished like a top-end hotel, with super-comfy Hypnos beds with quality linen, Smart TVs and WiFi, Nespresso coffee machines and en-suite bathrooms with underfloor heating, plunge showers and – in two of the rooms – baths as well. The house boasts a spacious sitting room with an open fire, a comfy conservatory with plenty of seating, and a large, very well-equipped country kitchen for cooking up an evening feast (an Aga keeps you toasty during the winter months). But that's not all: there's also a sauna, a heated swimming pool (open during June–September) and a games room with a snooker table, table football and darts, so there's no excuse for being bored! It's useful to know there's additional, equally comfortable accommodation at the beautifully set-up Old Stables, and they even have three shepherds huts behind the house to accommodate any overflow – or for those who prefer to be closer to nature!

Unlike most self-catering properties, there are staff on hand to help you make the most of your stay: they can put you in touch with private chefs and caterers if you can't be bothered to cook or want to celebrate a special occasion, and arrange yoga sessions, spa treatments and various outdoor activities. In any case, Godwick's grounds are a wonderful place to wander, exploring the park, woodland and deserted estate village (either by yourself or on a guided tour with James, the owner). Beyond, you're well placed for walks or bike rides into the Norfolk countryside, either north towards the coast or south where you'll find the abbey ruins at Castle Acre. There are also two of the best foodie pubs in the county within a few miles of the Hall – the Brisley Bell, which is just about within walking distance, and the similarly excellent Sculthorpe Mill near Fakenham. What more could you possibly want?
