Godwick Hall Shepherds Huts

Just when we thought things couldn't get any better at the sumptuous country estate of Godwick Hall in North Norfolk, the owners introduced 'schlamping' – basically the term they have given to the ultra-luxurious glamping they offer in one of three well-appointed shepherds huts in the grounds.

Glamping doesn't come much better than at these little beauties, which are designed to offer cosy couples the chance to enjoy a secluded and romantic break in the glorious countryside of North Norfolk – very comfortable, a little bit rustic, and each located in a choice spot on on this 100-acre estate. Each comes with hot running water and solid oak floors, mini-kitchens complete with butler sink, fridge and microwave, a DAB radio and a super-comfy double bed, and an en-suite shower and loo facilities. Outside there is a two-person hammock and outside seating. Going to sleep to the hoots of owls and waking up among the tree are a joy whichever way you look at it. But it's even better if you opt for one of  the many extras that re available  – from a welcome breakfast hamper or bottle of sparkling wine to your own BBQ or a 'stargazer package', which includes a fire pit with wood and kindling, two blankets and marshmallows and skewers.

Each hut is named after the sheep varieties – Norfolk Horn, Herdwick and Ryeland – that roam Godwick's grounds, and you could do worse than join them, exploring the park and woodland including the deserted estate 'village' of Godwick (which you can choose to do by yourself or on a guided tour with the owner James Garner). Beyond, you are well placed for walks into the Norfolk countryside, either north towards the coast or south towards the abbey ruins at Castle Acre; and there'a a terrific pub, the Brisley Bell, just about within walking distance to the east.
