Just when we thought things couldn't get any better at the sumptuous country estate of Godwick Hall in North Norfolk, the owners introduced 'schlamping' – basically, the term they've given to the ultra-luxurious glamping they offer in one of three well-appointed shepherds huts in the grounds.
Glamping doesn't come much better than at these little beauties, which are designed to offer cosy couples the chance to enjoy a secluded and romantic break in the glorious countryside of North Norfolk – very comfortable, a little bit rustic, and each located in a choice spot on this 100-acre estate. Each comes with hot running water and solid oak floors, mini-kitchens complete with butler sink, fridge and microwave, a DAB radio and a super-comfy double bed, and an en-suite shower and toilet facilities. Outside, there's a two-person hammock and seating. Going to sleep to the hoots of owls and waking up among the trees is a joy whichever way you look at it. But it's even better if you opt for one of the many available extras – from a welcome breakfast hamper or a bottle of sparkling wine to your own BBQ or a 'stargazer package', which includes a fire pit with wood and kindling, two blankets, marshmallows and skewers. They also put up a couple of large bell tents in the adjacent field during the summer, but if you're with people who just don't do glamping, they can always hunker down in style at the Hall's stunning Old Stables, which are just footsteps away.
Each hut is named after the sheep varieties – Norfolk Horn, Herdwick and Ryeland – that roam Godwick's grounds, and you could do worse than join them, exploring the park and woodland, including the deserted estate 'village' of Godwick (which you can choose to do by yourself or on a guided tour with the owner James). Beyond, you're well placed for walks into the surrounding Norfolk countryside: head north towards the coast or make your way south for the abbey ruins at Castle Acre. There are also two terrific foodie pubs nearby – the Brisley Bell to the east, and Sculthorpe Mill close to Fakenham.
