There's a no doubt that the small town of Painswick in Gloucestershire, on the western edge of The Cotswolds, is about as desirable a place to stay as you could find. Known as a 'Queen of the Cotswolds', its steep streets, honey-coloured houses and views over gorgeous surrounding countryside deliver in equal measure. Plus it has a very comfortable hotel at its heart – The Painswick – that not only makes the most of the views but also has a lovely and very typical Cotswolds stone cottage next door for rent: perfect for families who prefer to self-cater and also giving you the best of both worlds, with all the facilities of the hotel on your doorstep.

Like the hotel, The Painswick's cottage is a stunning place to stay: beautifully renovated so that it retains all the character of a stone Cotswolds cottage but also with all the modern amenities you require. Again like the hotel, it welcomes dogs, and has a small garden with outdoor furniture at the back and a courtyard to the side. Downstairs, there's a sitting room with a large L-shaped sofa and log burner, while upstairs there are three double bedrooms – one with its own rolltop bath, and the other two with en-suite shower rooms. The kitchen is well kitted out with a dishwasher, microwave and washing machine and dryer, plus that all-important a Nespresso machine, and there's a separate dining room. Extras include good WiFi, a toy box for small children, books and board games and a bed for your four-legged friend!

Uniquely, the next door hotel gives you options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and even afternoon tea. It also help with bike hire and visits to local attractions, because it would be a pity to stay here and not get out to see what's around. Painswick itself is worth a good stroll, a perfectly preserved Cotswolds wool town that has a lots of wanderable narrow streets, a beautiful medieval church and a unique Rococo Garden (again, the hotel can organise tickets to this), and there are any number of attractions in the countryside beyond – most notably a walk up to the nearby 280-metre peak of Painswick Beacon, for panoramic views over several counties, and walks on the Cotswolds Way, which passes through the town (the hotel can provide maps and wellies if necessary).
