Homey comfort in a traditional country pub set in the Cotswold near Stroud

For a great pub in a truly glorious setting, look no further. Dating from 1633, the Crown’s venerable main building was originally a cider house; in the course of time it became the quintessential Cotswold inn - with welcoming fireplace, exposed honey-stone walls and ancient, undulating beams. Its outlook on to the Golden Valley of the River Frome is serene. The location is very rural yet easily accessible - pretty Frampton Mansell is just 12 miles from Cirencester. From its hearty menu (homemade burgers, spicy veg mains, Sunday roasts) to its bar stocked with an impressive range of Gloucestershire ales, the Crown is a no-nonsense, traditional inn with lots of local flavour, and most nights of the week a local crowd, too (Bonfire Night here is near-legendary). It exudes a sense of cordiality. In a separate, purpose-built annexe away from all the pub activity and noise, there are 12 peaceful, streamlined bedrooms offering homey comfort at pleasingly competitive rates – it would be a tall call to find better value in the Cotswolds.
