This is a classic country house hotel and spa, offering the chance to stay in an Elizabethan manor house which sits in eight acres of gardens and grounds. It works as a luxurious base from which to visit local sights or as the basis for a relaxing stay where you just stay put and enjoy all that’s on offer.
Each of the 21 guest rooms here is different – much as you might expect from a hotel which occupies a building dating back more than 400 years. But it’s not just shape and size which gives each its individual charm; the fabric, furniture and finish do that too. While leaded windows and exposed beams feature in some of the rooms, the overall feel throughout all of them is clean and contemporary, and it goes without saying that the feeling extends to the en-suite bathrooms and room facilities which offer everything you would expect from a place which has been awarded four AA Red Stars.
The inspectors have also been dishing out their awards downstairs, where the fine dining experience on offer in the Garden Room Restaurant has earned a very impressive three AA Rosettes. It’s an elegant spot, with white table cloths, velvety upholstered seats and gilt mirrors alongside contemporary candlesticks. Guest lounges are no less comfortable but perhaps a touch more traditional and focused around their fireplaces and views of the glorious gardens and grounds. And then there’s the Elan spa, which is housed in an attached lodge building, along with some of the guest rooms. Entry for guests is timed so it never gets too busy in the pool, sauna or steam room here, and there’s a good range of treatments on offer too.
