In a gated development in Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park you'll find Lomond Lodges, a collection of luxury holiday homes, from apartments to houses. Oakwoods is the latter – a four-bedroom, 10-person property that's ideal for families and small groups of friends. Surrounded by verdant Scottish countryside and with a backdrop of towering mountains, it's easy to get lost in the views. But for those seeking activities, there's plenty to do, from hiking and cycling to boating.

Enter the idyllic getaway and take in the large, open-plan living, dining and kitchen space, with doors leading onto the patio and into the sizeable garden beyond. There, you'll discover a Weber BBQ for al fresco cooking and a hot tub to relax in. Back inside, the rustic-style kitchen features wood and marble and is equipped with all you need, from a fridge, multi-fuel stove and an oven, to a Nespresso machine and a microwave. Pull up a pew in the window seat with a coffee and admire the vistas while deciding what to do with your day. Adjacent, you'll find a second lounge, meaning everyone can spread out a bit. The musical among you will enjoy tinkling the ivories on the piano in the dining room, and those with a competitive streak will gravitate to the games area complete with a dart board. Bedroom-wise, there are two on the ground floor – the master double with an en-suite that's home to a freestanding bath and a walk-in shower, and a twin with a separate shower room. Upstairs, there are two more doubles and another shower room. That level also has a sitting area equipped with a sofa bed, which works well for those with young children.

Oakwoods House is dog-welcoming, so he or she can go adventuring with you, whether it's exploring the national park or heading to The Clachan, Scotland’s oldest licensed pub in the nearby village of Drymen. Other things to do range from visiting Glengoyne Distillery and cruising on Loch Lomond to outdoor thrillseeking at In Your Element, where you can try guided canoeing, river tubing and gorge walking – although you may want to leave Fido back at Oakwoods for those.
