It's a pretty safe bet that you won't have stayed in a B&B quite like this one before. Located just off the bottom of Market Place, Richmond's Millgate House is quite simply extraordinary – a Georgian townhouse of lavish, theatrical elegance sitting above a magical, sheltered walled garden with views down to the River Swale and its waterfalls. It's won almost every award going – the Good Hotel Guide's B&B of the Year for 2011, for example – with visitors charmed and amazed in equal measure by a house that is positively stuffed with antiques and art.
There are eye-opening curios and wonderfully ornate pieces at every turn, and while each of the three guest rooms is lovely in its own way, the ones overlooking the garden have the finest aspect. Meanwhile, in the glorious garden-view dining room, a splendid breakfast on polished mahogany tables is less a mere meal and more an experience. The owners, Austin and Tim, have been here almost 40 years and have made Millgate House and its garden a place very much in their own image – charming, discreet and hugely likeable. Trust us, you won't want to leave.
