Hooppells Torr
South West England Devon Kingsbridge
- From £155 a night
- 2 Guest Rooms
- Boutique B&B
In a tucked-away, little-known corner of South Devon, it does the heart good to stumble upon this stylish and very comfortable boutique B&B, run by two escapees from London and very much modelled in their own image, which combines Simon's love of food and drink with Jeeva's qualifications and experience in the hospitality industry. Based in a sensitively renovated Devon farmhouse, it is, as they say themselves, a home they wanted to share with others – and they couldn't have done it with more care, style or attention to detail. Facilities, too, are top-notch, with superfast wifi throughout, a good-sized heated indoor saltwater swimming pool for use in the summer months and a carefully curated wine list.
They have just two, beautifully
decorated, spacious guest rooms. Hydrangea, which is the larger of the two, is decorated in a soothing, contemporary country style that is only enhanced
by the views over their lovely gardens and has a large en-suite bathroom where
you can relax in a traditional cast-iron tub. The second room,
Pondicherry, which is only slightly smaller, is south-facing, making it exceptionally
light and sunny in summer. In keeping with its name, it has a south Asian feel,
with oranges and reds, Indian hand-carved wooden furniture and a smaller
en-suite with a rainforest shower. Both rooms have extremely comfortable
king-size beds, high quality Egyptian cotton sheets, tea- and coffee-making
facilities (including Nespresso machines), Roberts Radios and Bramley
toiletries – and there's super-fast wifi throughout. One thing they don't have, however – deliberately so – is TVs, plus they prefer to keep the vibe a largely adult one, with no children under 14. So no distractions, and no reasons not to properly relax!
They serve an excellent breakfast in the conservatory downstairs and do a Full English along with all sorts of other goodies, with a seasonal special each day, including Simon's home-smoked salmon, avocado and poached egg on toast and American-style pancakes. After breakfast, Jeeva and Simon are equally happy to leave you alone or advise on how to spend your day – maybe walking down to Wonwell beach at the mouth of the nearby river, or visiting Bigbury-on-Sea, just three miles away along the coast path, where you can stroll over or take the sea tractor to its famous offshore island. Closer to home, in Ringmore, you can walk down to Ayrmer Cover and its seaside pub, The Journey's End, or just hang about in Kingston itself, visiting its own village pub, The Dolphin, and enjoying Hooppells Torr's large and lovely garden, which gives way to a further five acres of of gorgeous grounds, home to orchards and woodlands and views over Dartmoor and lots of places from which to enjoy them.
Whatever you decide to do, it's as restful a place to stay in Devon as you'll find – we're pretty sure you'll be back!
