Eskdale’s Woolpack has undergone a real transformation, without losing any of its charm and character. It’s still a great country inn, en route to some of the Lakes’ highest peaks, with a deep, rural location that guarantees a quiet night’s sleep. But the downstairs bar has been turned into a sleek, contemporary drinking and dining space – wooden floors, slate bar, wood-burning stove – serving anything from its own hot-smoked salmon fishcakes to locally sourced burgers, with the trump card of a genuine wood-fired pizza oven turning out crispy gourmet pizzas. It’s also big on local beers, though champagne by the glass is just as much the Woolpack way these days.
