As one of the most popular spots in the Lake District, the charming village of Grasmere sees a lot of comings and goings during the day, with visitors hot on the Wordsworth trail or heading out onto the fells. But there's something magical about staying the night, as the sun sets on the hills and lake, and even better if it's somewhere with the style and character of the Victorian House. It's been a guest house since it opened in 1872 and retains its original quirks and proportions, but it has also been updated with real flair and style, designer furnishings, and a highly personal touch.
The rooms are right on the button – stylish and comfortable, with locally sourced hot drinks and coffee machines on request. They're beautifully turned out, with lots of natural light and garden views. 'Stargazer' rooms at the top of the house look straight out through large feature glass windows onto the fells, with telescopes provided. Some rooms are spacious enough to accommodate extra beds or travel cots for families, or you could book interconnecting rooms for a real family-friendly stay. 'Cosy' rooms do have a double bed but are more suited for solo guests, and there are dog-friendly rooms with hard flooring throughout. Other options include a two-room suite in an adjacent cottage – the feel and style are the same as the main house – and even a gorgeous, light-flooded, riverside shepherd's hut with full mod-cons: underfloor heating, roll-top bath and a private fire pit.
Meanwhile, Grasmere itself is a beauty, with its historic churchyard and Wordsworth graves, old-time gingerbread shop, and a short stroll to the famous Wordsworth houses of Dove Cottage and Allan Bank. There are walks right from the doorstep to some of the Lake District's most alluring beauty spots, or jump on an open-top bus down to Ambleside and Windermere for boat cruises and more. You can also wild swim in the nearby River Rothay and Grasmere, or hike to Alcock or Easdale Tarn and take a dip there. And when the sun goes down, and the crowds go home, you have the quiet lanes and lakeside strolls to yourself, not forgetting the sanctity of the Victorian House and its genteel comforts and home-from-home feel.
