Chugging across Derwent Water by wooden launch is quite the nicest way to see the north Lake’s most alluring stretch of water. There are landing stages all around the lake where you can get off and stretch your legs – or set off on longer hikes, either through pretty Borrowdale or up the classic peak of Cat Bells. Stay on for the whole trip and you get an enjoyable 50-minute cruise of the lake. There are also summer evening cruises (school holidays only) with a glass of wine and the setting sun for company.
