The George Inn
High Street Alfriston East Sussex BN26 5SY
Snuggled into a riverside hollow where three strands of the South Downs Way intersect, the pretty Sussex village of Alfriston attracts quite a procession of walkers, cyclists and horse riders, many of whom kick the mud off their boots at the door of The George and sidle inside for a pint of Olde Trip and a plate of something equally restoring. Of the three ancient inns within whistling distance of each other on the village High Street, The George, with its low beams, roaring fire and an intriguing history as a tavern for soldiers and smugglers, is the foodies’ favourite. Settle yourself down on an old church pew in the hop-draped bar and you can leaf through the papers while waiting for your order to arrive. The kitchen is run by talented young chefs who have a good eye for quality local fish and meat and an excellent way with sauces. If you have room for just one thing more, then skip pudding and treat yourself to the Cracking Cheeseboard instead – it’s legendary.
