Enjoy the charms of life in leafy East Sussex with a stay at Granary Cottages. Situated on the edge of the rural village of Chiddingly, these three holiday homes offer a peaceful place to stay within reach of many of the county’s highlights. There’s the Ashdown Forest to the north and the South Downs National Park at the other end of the compass. There are plenty of castles, grand houses and gardens to visit – along with a wealth of good pubs. And that’s not to mention the sea, which is an easy drive from here.
Converted from an old granary that was part of the neighbouring farm, the cottages – Oat, Wheat and Barley – still offer a few nods to their former use, and not just in their names. Red brick walls, exposed beams and a little bit of country-cottage styling take care of that. Two-bedroomed Oat and Barley sit at either end of this terrace of three, with one-bedroomed Wheat in the middle.
Whichever cottage you choose, you’ll find that they are all light, clean and contemporary while still being homely. Underfloor heating makes the cottages cosy when it’s cool and small gardens with outdoor furniture mean you can eat outdoors when it’s warm. There are also two great country pubs a bracing walk away: stride out on the Vanguard Way and you’ll find the lovely Six Bells after a mile; hike a bit further and you can follow The Weald Way to The Gun Inn.
It’s this sort of stuff that makes a holiday here special – long walks, great views of lovely countryside and good food. Perhaps it’s this healthy combination, as well as proximity to London, that has attracted so many artists and creatives here. You can explore that side of things with visits to the home of surrealist artists at Farleys House and the Bloomsbury Group at Charleston House, both less than five miles away. Or perhaps you’d like to visit the opera at Glyndebourne, which is less than 10 miles from the cottages. If you’re getting the impression that it’s all rather lovely in East Sussex, you’re right – and that includes what's on offer at Granary Cottages!
