An East Sussex vineyard specializing in sprkling wine, Rathfinny occupies a south-facing slop on the South Downs, a memorable spot that just happens also to be perfect for growing vines on the same chalk soil as they enjoy in the champagne heartland of northeastern France. The vienyrd here is almost 15 years old, and uring that ime they have built a reputation for traditionally made sparkling wines made form hand-harvested grapes that are among Sussex's best. They also run year-round tastings and tours and have a shop and not one but three restaurants and bars – the relaxed Hut wine bar, where they serve snacks and drinks, the Flint Barns dining room which serves extremely good fixed-price dinner and Sunday lunch menus, and the fine dining-style Tasting Room restaurant, which also lunch and a £90 10-course tasting menu in the evening.
The vineyard also offers accommodation, which can be very welcome indeed if you have just enjoyed a good diner – varying from the 10 guest rooms of the Flint Barns restaurant to a self-catering cottage for four people on the estate for extended stays of four nights or more. The Flint Barn rooms were originally built for grape-piickers during the harvest, who must have considered themselves lucky to have enjoyed these bright and contemporary bedrooms which come with king-size or double beds,WiFi, en-suite shower rooms with toiletries and usually a desk. Dogs are welcome and breakfast is included in the rate. One of the rooms is a single, and a couple are smaller and have no vineyard views, and these are consequenrly very well-priced, although you would be well advised to make the most of the location and pay for a room with a view.
The view may well make you want to hang around the estate, doing a tour and a tasting, eating and drinking well and taking in the life of the vineyard – and they offer a number of packages during harvest when you can do exactly that. But don't forget that Rathfinny is very well placed for exploring the pretty village of Alfriston, nearby villages like Kingston and Firle (whet you will find excellent local pubs), or the likeable Sussex town of Lewes. You're also just a few miles from the sea at Seaford, Birling Gap and the Seven Sisters, and Eastbourne is only a short drive away. All in all you couldn't be better placed for this part of Sussex.
