Very handily positioned between Cheltenham and Bourton-on-the-Water, the 1500-acre Notgrove estate is your own private slice of Cotswolds – a beautiful pocket of rolling hills, fields and woodland, whose cottages and glamping not only provide the opportunity for a very special rural escape within reach of London, but also a terrific base for exploring the region. You could stay here for a week, however, and not leave the site: it's crisscrossed by cycleways and footpaths, and all manner of activities are possible, from quad-biking, clay pigeon shooting and tennis to spa and beauty treatments and yoga. They also host various courses – take your pick from bee-keeping, dry-stone-walling, foraging and falconry, among others.
At the centre of the estate, accommodation ranges from a selection of very comfortable converted self-catering barns to five seasonal safari tents and nine rustic glamping pods. There are four barns in all, of various shapes and sizes, sleeping from six to eight people, all beautifully furnished and very well-equipped, with large living rooms and well-appointed kitchens, wooden floors and wood-burning stoves, plus flatscreen TVs with Freeview and DVD players. They also have private gardens and off-road parking, and big groups can take more than one barn if they want, with accommodation possible for up to 30. Dogs also are welcome in all barns, and they all have good WiFi.
As for the glamping, the estate's nine pods are equally well-equipped and have electricity and heating throughout. They represent the luxurious, self-contained end of glamping and come with en-suite shower rooms and their own toilets, a dining space and kitchenette, plus the optional extras of utensils and bed linen if you want them, and dogs are welcome in three of the pods. In the same way, the safari tents are luxuriously turned out and make a great alternative during the summer months (they're only available from April to September), sleeping up to six people under canvas in three separate bedrooms. Each has its own kitchenette with basic equipment, light and electricity, a wood burner for heat, a flushing toilet (although showers are separate), outdoor seating and a barbecue. Dogs are welcome in them all. Whichever you choose, there's WiFi available.
The estate has a games room, tennis court, donkeys, goats and alpacas to pet, and the aforementioned footpaths and cycle paths (you can hire a bike on-site). There are also multiple things to do beyond the estate: Bourton-on-the-Water is on your doorstep, as is the Cotswold Farm Park, and three national walking trails cross the Notgrove's land – the Macmillan, Diamond and Gloucestershire Ways. Consider also a trip to nearby Sudeley Castle and Gardens, or indeed to Cheltenham, an elegant town only a few miles away. Or just wander off to the pub – there are loads of good places a longish walk or shortish drive away, plus there's The Nuttery café in the village with a bar, which opens most days for breakfast and lunch, on Friday nights for food and drinks, and Sunday for roasts.
