Saracen's Head
Wolterton Near Erpingham Norfolk NR11 7LZ
Tim and Janie Elwes took over this north Norfolk pub a few years ago, and have catapulted it into the 21st-century, with a set of lovely upstairs rooms, and a fab downstairs restaurant that serves inventive and locally sourced food – indeed the menu informs you just how many miles the ingredients have travelled. The food is hearty yet refined, with seasonal variations that mean there's always something new on the menu – think grilled mackerel fillet or Morston mussels to start, followed by slowed-cooked belly pork with mustard mash or haunch of venison with red cabbage. The service is great and the overall vibe friendly and cosy – as seems appropriate in what is about as rural a location as you could imagine. There's a courtyard out the back where you can enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif, or just have a drink in the cosy bar.
