Hospitality runs deep with the Graveling family, one branch of which (siblings Chris, Richard, Liz, Hannah and Ruth) runs
The Grove Cromer, a very comfortable and unpretentious hotel on the North Norfolk Coast, while Ruth also has a collection of yurts and a shepherds hut on the same site. It's a terrific location, and both businesses rub along together very happily, sharing the secluded grounds and the hotel's many facilities, as well as its all-important access to the beach – easily reached by a footpath that leads through the woods.
The hotel used to be the Graveling family home, so they know the location better than anyone, and by any standards, this is a glorious place to come glamping. Situated in a sheltered spot on the clifftop above one of Norfolk's best stretches of sandy beach, you have a choice of five lovely yurts and a very comfy and large shepherds lodge. The yurts vary in size and sleep between 4 and 8 guests, while the spacious shepherds lodge is set a little apart from the rest and sleeps 5 – on a king-size bed and a triple bunk (with bed linen). It has a kitchen and dining area, an en-suite bathroom (with towels) and lots of outside cooking facilities like a fire pit, barbecue and pizza oven. It even has its own hot tub and table tennis table! The yurts offer either regular double beds or bunk beds (again with bed linen), wood burners, and a covered cooking area with a barbecue, gas hob and fridge. There's electricity, WiFi and charging points for your phone – and EV charging points for your car at the hotel.
The beauty of The Grove is not only the accommodation, but the fact you can use all the hotel's facilities. There are two restaurants for a start – the two AA-rosette Garden Rooms in the main building, and the Sundown in a large tipi in the grounds, right next to the glamping, which serves pizzas and 'Norfolk tapas' during the summer. Both are provided with ingredients from the hotel's rather magnificent kitchen garden. There's also a cosy bar, with patio tables outside, and a heated indoor swimming pool, massage hut and a play area for kids. And you're just a 10-minute walk from the beach below, accessed by way of a path which leads through the woods from the shepherds lodge.
Finally, you're very handily placed at The Grove for the delights of Cromer, the centre of which, with its pier, pubs and restaurants, including award-winning fish and chips, is a 10-minute stroll away. There's a good beach here too, and also in the opposite direction, the adjacent small resort of Overstrand, where you can buy fresh crabs and lobsters and enjoy tea and cake at the excellent Clifftop Café!
