Just outside the North Norfolk village of Itteringham, Mannington Hall is an impressive 15th-century moated manor with some spectacular gardens, and it has the occasionally open day if you want to visit. But why wait when you can stay at Amber's Bell Tents, which occupies a three-acre field that overlooks the water meadows beyond the gardens, having teamed up with Mannington's committed conservationist owners, Lord and Lady Walpole, to present a luxurious, low-impact bell tent site. It's pretty popular, and once here it's not hard to see why.
Amber's 5-metre, bunting-adorned tents are spacious and airy, made of breathable natural cotton – the perfect antidote to stuffy polyester tents. They have up to 10 bell tents here at any one time, all kitted out with cute vintage touches, along with double beds, wood burners, rugs, fairy lights, lanterns and a cool box and cooking kit – plus the tents have an awning so you can spend the evening losing yourself to the light-pollution-free night sky. There is an onsite tea room for your afternoon snacks, and bespoke catering options can be ordered in advance – all celebrating the best of local produce. Amber's onsite honesty shop is also stocked with the essentials you'll need for a good campfire, plenty of wood and fuel so you can toast those marshmallows into the last of the wee hours.
The location is great, with the North Norfolk Coast close by, and the watery expanses of the Broads National Park to the south, but with so much to do in Mannington itself – from badminton and boules, woodland walks and childrens' nature courses – you may just decide to stay put!
