The Makery Emporium & Workshop
16 Northumberland Place Bath BA1 5AR
A kind of little-kid delight takes over at the Makery. Set up by a couple who fully believe in make-do-and mend (and why not make it pretty while you're at it?), this creative endeavour now has two outlets in Bath. The Emporium, in Northumberland Place, is a lacy, lovely shop of oddments, from buttons and trim to make-it-yourself kits and craft books; drop in any time to buy goodies, and browse works by local artisans. Meanwhile, the Workshop, at 146 Walcot Street, runs a range of courses: here you can learn to make everything from lampshades to tea-cosies, dresses to knickers. The onus is on learning new skills that can save you money in a fun environment, perfect for crafty types or kids parties, hen dos and birthday bashes. Plus the Workshop opens its doors as a cafe (think lovely cupcakes) every Friday, 10am–1pm, for those who want to natter over their knitting.
