When you think about YHA hostels, it's unlikely that a striking Italianate mansion set in large private gardens springs to mind. But that's exactly what you get with YHA Bath. Visually stunning and boasting impressive architecture, this grade II listed building is not only great value for money, it's in a brilliant city centre location, walking distance from the wonderful attractions Bath has to offer. What's more, it's just undergone a whopping £2.5 million facelift, and now boasts a fantastic new lounge and self-catering kitchen, disabled access facilities and additional parking, freshly updated for 2018.
It's a comfortable and homely place, with 133 beds spread across dorm rooms, private rooms and family rooms, some of which have en-suite bathrooms. Roman-inspired detail can be spotted throughout, with romantic balconies, carved stone pillars and an intricate wrought-iron staircase. There's all the things you would be expect in a hostel like this – a bar, laundry room, TV and Wifi, and a restaurant serving simple food like burgers, jackets and pies. Kids eat for free, a nice touch.
Being just a mile or so from the city centre is a real bonus: you're close to the famous Roman Baths and Abbey, not to mention a treasure trove of artisan retailers and characterful independent shops hidden away in the picturesque passages and alleyways. There are so many museums to visit, you won't know where to start – for history lovers the Jane Austen Centre is unmissable, and fashionistas shouldn't leave without taking a trip to the Fashion Museum, while the 6-mile circular Bath Skyline walk is just at the top of the hill from the hostel: great for an elevated view of the city. All in all, YHA Bath is a great example of the modern YHA of the future, catering fantastically for families, friends and couples.
