Who wouldn’t love a pub that combines the old and the new with characterful flourishes? The Lion does so with aplomb. This 15th-century coaching inn is in the heart of the timeless market town of Winchcombe, which lies in wonderful walking country and is criss-crossed by long-distance footpaths. Step inside the pub and you’re in a bright venue with rugs on flagstone floors, exposed stone walls and limed beams. To one side is an expansive dining area, to the other is a cosy snug with a fireplace and armchairs. Behind this is the bar serving not only ales and wines but also seriously good cocktails. Food is a big draw here; the menu offers modern British cuisine (the likes of venison haunch with celeriac, and beetroot and lentil burgers) mainly based on local produce - Winchcombe residents are even encouraged to bring in homegrown veg for the kitchen in return for a drink. Decorated in soothing colours, the eight bedrooms are rustic-stylish with retro touches such as old-school phones; there are four upstairs above the pub and four set around the lovely courtyard garden.
